Complete Umrah Guide for First-Time Pilgrims
A step-by-step overview of the four rites of Umrah — Ihram, Tawaf, Sa'i and Halq/Taqsir — plus practical tips for first-time pilgrims travelling from India.
What is Umrah?
Umrah is a non-mandatory pilgrimage to the sacred city of Makkah, which can be performed at any time of the year. Unlike Hajj, Umrah takes only a few hours to perform, though most Indian pilgrims combine it with a stay of 7-21 days across Makkah and Madinah.
The four rites of Umrah
1. Ihram
Enter the state of Ihram at the designated Miqat with the intention (niyyah) to perform Umrah. Men wear two unstitched white sheets; women wear their regular modest clothing.
2. Tawaf
Circumambulate the Ka'bah seven times in an anti-clockwise direction, starting and ending at the Black Stone corner. Recite du'a as guided by your Mutawwif.
3. Sa'i
Walk seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwa, commemorating Hajra's search for water. This is now performed within the Masjid al-Haram complex.
4. Halq or Taqsir
Men shave the head (Halq) or trim (Taqsir); women trim a fingertip length of hair. This exits the state of Ihram and completes Umrah.
Practical tips
- Carry two Ihram sets — the airport journey and first few days can be intense.
- Keep a small pouch for prayer beads, spectacles and phone.
- Learn the essential du'a in advance so you can focus on ibadah.
- Choose a package with hotels within walking distance of the Haram to save energy.
